Beets:

LAKESIDE FOODS CANNED PICKLED SLICED BEETS

DETAILS: 105-ounce canned pickled sliced beets manufactured by Lakeside Foods Inc. of Manitowoc, Wis., sold to food service distributors in Ala., Fla., Ga., Ill., Ind., Kan., Ky., Mich., Minn., Mo., Miss., N.C., Ohio, Okla., Pa., S.C., Tenn., and Wis., from December 2009 to January 2011.

WHY: Some cans may have been under processed and may be contaminated with harmful organisms including Clostridium botulinum. Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning that could cause general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty breathing, constipation and trouble with speaking or swallowing.

INCIDENTS: No report of illness.

SERRANO PEPPERS

DETAILS: Serrano peppers were recalled by World Variety Produce, Inc., of Los Angeles. The recalled peppers were sold in Walmart stores in Wisconsin, Montana, Utah and Wyoming and Jewel-Osco stores in Illinois between the dates of March 1 through March 18.

WHY: They have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

INCIDENTS: There have been no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.
