I love to cook soups so this is something that I have had to deal with a number of times
- I suggest NOT USING a normal blender. Hot liquid has a tendency to shoot out the top and burn everything in its path especially hand 
- Use an Immersion Blender Like one in the picture above.
- Works very well
- Also you can blend the ingredients in your pot ( less work for you)

I have the same immersion blender and love it! But I found out you really have to immerse it before you turn it on–unless you want to spend a lot of time cleaning walls, counters, clothing, etc.
