How To Tell If Eggs Are Still Good

Nobody wants a rotten egg – here is a very simple trick to tell if your eggs are still good which could potentially save you a little bit of money.

Fill a bowl with cold water and place an egg in it

Sinks = Good

Floats = Bad

Oiling the outer shell, with vegetable oil, will seal the pores and increase the shelf life by at least 50%

Old eggs are better for hardboiling and peel easier than fresh eggs. Crack the shells while still hot, then shock them in an ice water bath.

Vindication! I’ve been doing this or years and I never knew where I learned it or if it was really true. Thanks a ton for posting it. :)

That’s how we did it on the farm. The ones that sank in the watering trough had to be taken into the kitchen but the ones that floated were ours to throw at trains or really strict teachers houses. Lol.

Also – to find out if an egg is hard-boiled or not, just spin it: If it spins slowly, it’s raw. If it spins quickly, it’s hard-boiled!
