I was really surprised to hear that tanning doesn’t cure acne. My sister has been tanning for years because she thought it cured her acne. She has even tried to get me to go with her! But I have already had issues with skin cancer before, and tanning in a tanning bed would only make it worse!

Myth #2 about junk food and oil, I recently was breaking out and had a really oily face and attributed to all the candy and snacks I was eating letely but to know that it is hormone related is interesting. Means my hormones were probably contributing to my sweet tooth that led to the greesy face :-(

Reply

I found that the eating junk food myth was surprising. I know my friend in Japan always stresses to me to watch what I eat. That what I am eating is causing my breakouts (as an adult, so I am not surprised by the fact ache is not just a teen issue as I had it all my life). I must say the Neutrogena products have totally helped me go from a pizza face to a pretty clear face. Thank you. I have people ask me all the time what I do for my skin so I am a walking billboard for Neutrogena. Just glad to hear that what i eat is a myth although I am still trying to be more healthy for other reasons.

I have learned and read about all of these myths in my nursing studies, and can’t say anything surprised me, I just wanted to say how well this was put together.

Sunscreen causes breakouts…no wonder when I applied sunscreen to my face at the beach I broke out the next day =/ Can’t win trying to protect your face!

I never realized that tanning doesn’t “cure” acne. I found this especially surprising, because my brther suffered bad acne as a teenager, and it was actually recommended to him by his dermotoligist to use a tanning bed a few times a week to help clear it up. Very surprising!!!

Jen August 17, 2012 at 2:06 pm

I never knew how much stress and depression could take a toll on your skin. Also lots of sun without protection.

Veronica S. August 17, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I stay informed about my skin so the majority of the myths were already debunked for myself years ago. That being said, I was surprised to hear that acne is not curable. Who would have thought all of those expensive prescription creams sold cannot cure it only help reduce the appearance.

I was most surprised by the myth that popping pimples makes them go away faster. I was always told to pop them when they have a whitehead. Opps.

I was surprised to hear that tanning can’t clear up acne. Every time I tan (which isn’t often) it seems to go away. Then again my face is naturally oily so it probably is just getting rid of the excess oil.

I was surprised to hear that tanning doesn’t help get rid of acne. I am 100% against tanning and I have friends that tan because they tell me it is supposed to help with acne problems. Good to know it is false!

That junk food doesn’t cause breakouts! I have heard all of my life that if you eat greasy food you will have a greasy, acne prone face! It does make sense that it is hormones because that is when I eat the greasy, bad for you foods.
