Make sure to REPIN this recipe

My whole family loved this dish – with the BIG move happening I am trying to cook dishes FAST that I can easily reheat for leftovers

With the whole move I am finding out how much “stuff” I really have — but that is another story…. But SERIOUSLY guys I am never buying anything ever again 😉

I am going to be adding this recipe into my full rotation of meals — what I love is that I can easily change it up as the seasons change — or adding different meats as they come on sale

I really hope you enjoy this recipe ( I know my family did – my mom, dad, and Eric 🙂 )

One Pan Cheesy Smoked Sausage & Pasta Recipe

If I did not mention it before but it seems that my dad has recently ( within the last year become lactose intolerant) so I have been trying to use much lactose free milk as possible I buy it from Walmart or Winco – I also try and avoid heavy cream when I can — so this dish can be made with heavy cream instead of the milk – I personally used lactose free milk because I wanted my dad to enjoy the pasta for lunch 🙂

This dish can be gluten free as long as you use gluten free pasta

I did not since I was not planning on eating this dish — since I used pork in the dish — I personally do not eat pork ( Long story but I am willing to cook it )

My family and I loved this recipe!!! We modified it slightly to remove the onions and red pepper flakes so my three-year-old would eat it. I’m sure they would have made it even more amazing though. 🙂 It was so quick and easy to make. You saved dinner! 🙂

  • Rita

Hi, it was pretty good & very easy to make. I didn’t have the right cheese in the house so had to go with what I had, which was a 4 cheese Mexican blend. Maybe not the best choose. And I didn’t have the red pepper flakes. I was hungry for pasta and the sausage was on sale when I had gone to the store, huh so was the tomatoes! Thanks for an easy & somewhat cheap dinner!

  • Madison

I’m back to make this recipe again! The first time I made this I didn’t have diced tomatoes, but I had sundried tomatoes which made it taste amazing! This time I got diced tomatoes and I’ll probably mix in a few sun-dried tomatoes in there too.

Thanks for the recipe; It’s a really big hit in my household!

  • Melissa

Love this recipe! Doubled the recipe to feed the masses, and my ten year old is on seconds! Thanks for a new constant!

  • Nancy Shaputis

I made this tonight when looking for a QUICK dinner solution. I luckily had everything needed. I used heavy cream instead of milk and water instead of chicken broth (I didn’t have any). I also added rubbed sage to my sausage. I used cheddar cheese and it was so delicious and rediculously easy. This will become a regular.

  • Sam

I just made this tonight and everyone loved it!! I omitted the red pepper flakes for my 2 year old, but it was a hit and super easy. My husband suggested next time adding some broccoli to the mix.

    • Kristin

It’s really good with fresh mushrooms and spinach added to it!! I usually add the mushrooms at the beginning with the onion to soften them a little and spinach at the end when you still in the cheese. Delicious and a bit healthier! I make this at least 3 times a month, it’s so easy!

  • April

I made this tonight for my family. My hubby and I liked it but the kids, not so much. One thought it was too spicy, i guess i’ll lessen the pepper to maybe a 1/4 tsp next time instead of a 1/2 tsp. The other 2 don’t like tomatoes. I still would make it again in hopes that their taste buds will change overtime. A flavorfull meal.

  • Lucy

I made this last night! So yummy and easy! I cooked the sausage and onions much longer than the recipe asked. I like my sausage to get nice and crispy, I cooked them for 20-25 minutes. I also used pepper jack cheese and cheddar cheese, as that is what I had in the fridge. SO YUMMY! Thanks!

  • Allison

Question: do you take the skin off the sausage? I normally do when i cook it whole. Will taking the skin off then cutting it make a difference? And I need a whole box of pasta for my family of 5. How can i make the recipe with 16oz of pasta?

    • Jenny

Hi Allison, I have 9 people to feed, one being a teenage boy, so what I did is I doubled the liquid and seasonings. I didn’t have chicken broth when I made it, but I had cream of chicken. I used two cans of that and four cups of water with one cup milk. You may need to add a little more water but this was to die for!!!! Hope that helps. Also I did a little more than doubled the seasonings so that it wasn’t too bland. Good luck!

  • Nicole

This recipe was amazing! We modified it and used mixture of whole wheat pasta, then added green peppers and zuchini! Was to die for, my mom 18 month old even loved it as well as my PICKY hubs. Had all the ingredients so it was great for a go-to.

  • LillithQ

Hiya, I’m going to make this to take to a local family with small children. I’d like to serve some vegetables either with or in this to make it a balanced meal. Any suggestions?

  • Christine at Must Love Home

Wow, this looks so good! I am always looking for one dish meals to keep the cleanup to a minimum (my son always accuses me of using every pan we have)! I am pinning and going to definitely try this soon! Thanks for sharing – Christine

  • Pat G

Really yummy! Added mushrooms in the sautéing step and chunks of zucchini in the step where the pasta was simmered. Used diced tomatoes with Italian seasoning in them. Sooooo easy.

  • Karen D.

Very good! I followed the directions exactly except I doubled the pasta, broth and water. I will definitely be making this again.

  • K Bennett

Made this for dinner tonight, and my hubby loved it! I tweaked the receipe a little, I omitted the onions and red pepper flakes and used diced tomatoes with chiles. It was just enough “kick” for us since we dont like spicy foods. Thanks for sharing.

  • Laura

Need to use our sausages tonight but have no more milk left (nor cream) can I omit the milk and it will still be nice and edible? How important is the milk for the recipe?

  • Maggie

What a tasty, easy recipe, I made it tonight! I omitted the red pepper flakes for my toddler`s sake, used a fresh tomato and a half as I didn`t have canned, and subbed a cup of cheddar and a cup of mozzarella for the cheddar jack. Also, didn`t have short pasta so subbed frozen tortellini. If I have any on hand next time, fresh spinach would make a nice addition. I love recipes like this that I can easily substitute when I don`t have ingredients on hand, thanks so much!

  • Natalie

I made this a few weeks ago and it has easily become one of my favorite pasta dishes! So quick and easy, and it uses ingredients that I usually have on hand, so it’s a great filler recipe when I am running low on groceries. Simple and delicious!

  • Ann Philbeck

Absolutely a great recipe. Thanks for posting. Used my homegrown garlic and minced it and my canned tomatoes from the summer. Keep posting these wonderful recipes. I use to cook all day long, now Im a longarmer and quilter so I like to keep my meals simple.

  • Andrea

I made this dish tonight. I used rotini pasta instead of the penne, just because that’s what i had on hand.

Also, i stirred in fresh grape tomatoes, halved, in when i added the cheese instead of canned.

The dish was awesome and the kiddos loved it!!!

    Awesome dish, thank you!!

  • melissa

I cut the chicken broth down to 3/4 cup because I was using leftover cooked noodles. It is delicious! Comfort food at its best!

  • Crystal

    Sara,
This is an easy and quick recipe to make!
I don’t eat pork either, due to religious reasons: Restoring Apostolic Christianity
I use Eckrich skinless beef or turkey sausage and it taste great in this recipe!!
    Thanks A Bunch!!

  • Kyle Kesatie

My husband and I love this recipe! It is one of our favorite recipes; he requests that I make it a lot 🙂

  • Janet Stephens

I just made this dish for dinner this evening and it turned out great. The only thing I’d add is that you need a lot more liquid than what is mentioned. I added at least 2 more cups of a mixture of milk and chicken broth. I needed it to fully cook the pasta, either wise, the pasta would have still been hard.
    Will make this dish again

  • Lauren

Absolutely loves this recipe. I used Johnsonville Spicy Sausages with mine but it came out perfect. It was quick and easy and plenty of leftovers for the next night. Thanks for this recipe one of my favorites so far.

  • Carolyn hickerson

I made the one pan cheesy smoked sausages and pasta recipe without the red pepper flakes only cause I didn’t gave any. My family loved it and so did I. I would make it again.

  • Denise Hernandez

Very delicious, but a little too soupy. I think I won’t add as much chicken broth next time.

  • Jeanie

Has become a family favorite! I include it at least once a month on our meal plan. The kids even ask for seconds. It reminds me of Boston Pizza’s sausage penne pasta. Thank you.

  • Rachel

This was a hit with my family! (ages 12,7 and 11 mo!) It was very easy and quick. I didn’t have any diced tomatoes on hand so I subbed salsa and subbed half and half for the milk, used brown rice penne noodles and sharp cheddar cheese. So good! Will for sure be making this again! Thanks for the recipe!

  • Kristel

No to this dish!! I went by the recipe exactly and I will never fix it again! To me, the ingredients just didn’t go together!!

  • Elizabeth Headley

My family absolutely loves this! Even my picky 5&8 year olds! Everytime I pull the ingredients out, their eyeballs get so big! Thank you so much for this wonderful meal!

  • Ashley

This is totally tasty! I had kielbasa on hand,so I used that instead and gluten free pasta. Amazing! Going to add to my regular dinner menu!

  • Sharon

Was looking for more traditional Italian so altered this recipe by using Italian sweet sausage and reduced cheese to 1 cup. Came out awesome

  • Brynn

Very tasty and easily adapted to the ingredients I had on hand: vegetable penne, fire roasted tomatoes, and sharp cheddar cheese! Will pin this so I can make it again.

  • Destiny

Hi there great recipe. I only had spaghetti so I used that and shockingly I had no cheese but i used cheddar cheese soup and added some spinach. It was the bomb!

  • Mariellen

Hi thx for dinner tonight !!!
I used rice milk – Cabot lactose free cheddar and fresh Italian hot sausage – delicious Thanks!!!

  • Lara

We enjoy this recipe however we don’t like how there is so much liquid and the cheese doesn’t melt throughout. We’ve tried less liquid and it’s still the same. Do you have any other recommendations to get the sauce thicker?

  • Michelle

Oh my goodness, this was awesome! The only change I made was using Sriracha instead of the pepper flakes. My family really enjoyed this as well, we all agree this recipe is a keeper! YUM!

  • Susan

How do you know what things with pork taste like if you don’t eat it? I would just omit those recipes entirely from my repertoire if that were the case for me. I am fixing this today for lunch. Fingers crossed that it is just as yummy as it looks.

  • Meg

Planning to make this tonight but I have a question. What sausage do you use? You don’t specify what type of sausage though your recipe title calls for Smoked Sausage. Other comments talk about removing the skin or cooking it whole. You did not say so, but if you are using precooked smoked sausage, are you slicing it before using it?

  • Amber

Made it (minus the shallots) for dinner tonight!! #DELISH and super easy and quick to make which I love as a mom of two very young babies!!!

  • Susan G

OMG – so good!! Next time I’ll garnish with fresh sliced basil, but honestly, this is such an easy, amazing dish. Oh, and I need to serve with some good bread for soaking up the sauce!

  • Robin

This was really good…though next time I will add the cooked sausage mixture toward the end. Sausage lost some of its flavor in the cooking w pasta, milk and broth. Nonetheless, still a great recipe. Even better as leftovers.

  • Yvonne

Just made and ate this tonight. It was really yummy. The red pepper flakes gave it a little bite. Will make again. There was extra liquid in it but after adding the cheese it thickened.

  • Judy

Hi! I made this recipe for dinner tonight! It was excellent!!! I prepared it just as described and will make this again and again! Thanks for sharing!!!

  • Ikayla

I added broccoli and used the Mexican blend cheese and it is perfect! I also used half and half since I didn’t have any milk! Thanks for this recipe!

  • Shannon

This is easy and so good. Instead of regular canned tomatoes I used rotel. This is one of my go to recipes. My husband loves it

  • Jeannie

So glad this recipe was written out since I’m blind. Pinterest is generally not blind friendly! I plan to make this tomorrow! Thank you so much! Jeannie Nashville Tn.

  • Kenda

Will definitely make this again. We like things spicy so substituted with a can of diced tomatoes with green chilies. We limit dairy so used almond milk and only half of the cheese called for. It was quick, easy, and delicious!

  • Anna White

I made this twice in the last two weeks. Once i tried it with andouille sausage. It came out pretty good. Im a huge fan of cajun flavors. Second time i mixed with beef sausage and andouille. It was the BOMB!. Thank you my family loves it❤

  • The Wilkins

Hello, this recipe was really easy and quick to fix. However I did make it a little spicy and I used rotel tomato, cajun seasoning and cut some cube chicken with it and we loved it. We will make again ☺

  • Celeste

This was not done after 15 minutes. Still very soupy. I double checked the amount of pasta stated in recipe which says 8oz dry which is about half of a box of bag but I see in the pic a whole box. Did you use the whole box or just half/8oz?!

  • lori bergman

I made the cheesy smoked sausage and pasta for the first time tonight. We loved it . I gave my friend some to take home and she loved it also. It’s definitely going to be on my list for supper many more times. Would be a great dish to take to a pot luck dinner , tailgate party, or any other get to together.

  • Jaclyn

This was amazing. Even my picky eater cleans her plate. I have made several variations of this recipe based on what I have stocked in the pantry. Our favorite is to add cajun seasoning, but the original is superb on it’s own. Try it you won’t be disappointed.

  • Carter

Just found this recipe on Pinterest and LOVED IT!
I made a couple of changes for myself – no diced tomatoes (used low sugar premade pasta sauce); added diced grilled chicken.and raw baby spinach; for the broth, I used 2 tsp of Better Than Boullion no chicken base and 2 cups hot water mixed together.

  • annie

Wow this was delicious! I used some hot and sweet primo sausage (browned it first then cut) and it was perfect. Whole family loved it!

  • Donna P.

I made this tonight and it was awesome! I used chicken instead of smoked sausage and I threw in some fresh spinach at the end. We ate at 5:00 but sometimes we get a call for ‘the fourth meal’. Betcha it won’t be for Taco Bell.

  • Shanna J

Just made this tonight. It would so delicious. The dish smelled so good and it was so flavorful. I will differently make it again. So easy. Thanks

  • DD Donnelly

Thank you for the quick dinner, my family really liked it. Used a whole onion instead of the scallions and it turned out great.

  • Kate Z

Made it for the family tonight and we loved it! Had to adjust some ingredients because we are low in groceries. One pan dinners are always good for me! Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Kate Z

Made it for dinner and we loved it! Had to adjust because we are low on groceries but one pan dinners are always great. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Bill Wolf

Awesome easy dish. This is coming from a daddy who doesn’t cook much. My wife and kids love it!! I’ve made it twice now, the first time per receipe, but it was a little spicy for my 9 year old. Second time I eliminated the red pepper flakes and used garlic powder instead of minced garlic.. just as good, either way.

  • Cassie

This was by FAR one of the BEST pasta dishes I’ve ever made (and I make a ton of pasta). I subbed heavy cream for milk (consistency came out perfect), and used whole grain pasta. No scallions. Def a new go-to.

  • Mathew E

I’ve used this recipe 4-5 times now and it’s been a hit each time, I use fire-roasted tomatoes, and roughly twice the cheese though. Very easy to make this dish.

  • Sarah

Love this! It’s been a weekly meal for months now. I use mild rotel. Best part, my Picky toddler loves it!

  • Kelie

I make this meal for my family a couple of times per month. It’s actually the 1 recipe that everyone loves! Yay!!! Thanks for this yummy, inexpensive, and easy dinner idea!

  • LeAnne

I discovered this recipe about a year ago and make it every other week if not more. I have a problem with the cheese clumping up at the end and not melting very well though…any tips on this?

  • Martha

I just made this for dinner. So yummy. I added extra sausage, immures the red pepper flakes and used heavy whipping cream instead of milk. Really good. I will for sure make again.

  • Mary

I made this tonight and we loved it. Very easy to make. The only thing I did was drain some of the liquid because it seemed to soupy for me.

  • Michelle

I think it could use more meat in it then what the recipe calls for because the pasta takes up most of the mean and there is hardly any meat..

  • Tina Schwarz

Made this for the first time – so yummy! I added green bell pepper which took it to the next level. Made it a vegetarian dish using Beyond Meat sausage. I have low sodium dietary restrictions so I omitted salt (salt is in the sausage and cheese), low sodium chicken broth and no salt diced tomatoes. Will definitely make this again!

  • Jes

We love this meal I make it all the time! Such an simple recipe that is so delicious. The recipe does drive me crazy that it says still in cheese instead of stir in cheese though lol. It gets me every time haha. Thanks for the amazing recipe!

  • Kim

I made this dish per the recipe and it was delicious! It is now in my meal rotation. Thank you for a great, easy recipe!

  • Erin

Found this on Pinterest after looking up dinner ideas. I made this dish tonight and hubby and I loved it! Tonight is Saturday, but this was so simple and quick that it’s going into our weeknight rotation. Thank you! Can’t wait to try your other recipes.

  • Lisa

Love this recipe. But for sure you should use whole milk. I don’t usually have it in my house, so I used 1% and it was runny. Other than that, it was great. I will use whole milk next time for sure. Lol

  • Elaine Carroll

OMG. This was soooooo good. I had only a little bit of kielbasa but so happy I made this. Definitely a keeper. My kitchen still smells amazing

  • Sunny

Oh I just made this recipe for dinner and my entire family loved it! We have picky eaters in our family but no one turned it down. I think it was completely gone in 30 minutes-thank you for this recipe! I will be making it from now on

  • Jennifer

Fixed this a couple weeks ago and this was a big hit with my family even my picky eaters. This is definitely a keeper. Heated up well too. I am gonna try it with ground italian sausage and follow recipe as directed, think it will be tasty as well. Sauce was delicious and super quick and easy especially after a long day at work!
With a side salad makes it a complete meal.
Will be fixing again this week!

  • Jenea

Love love love this recipe , this is my 2nd time making it and my husband and sons love it … this is definitely becoming a family favorite

  • Tina Carey

This turned out great… It was a leftovers night so we used Gouda, Fontina and cheddar jack ( Left overs from last nights cheese board) and added broccoli. Skipped the red pepper flakes. Added a half a spoonful of “better than bullion” chicken base to it and WOW.. This was tasty! Great, easy recipe!

  • Colleen

I had to thicken this with a little chicken broth and corn starch as this was more like a soup. I also added a little Italian seasoning at the end and some additional mixed cheeses. I would definitely brown off the sausage before adding onions so it becomes more crispy before all the liquids are added.

  • Arli Miller

Wow… my husband kind of turned up his nose a bit when I got the smoked sausage out…He has never been a big fan…lol. BUT..he really liked it! Had seconds, and said the chopped green onions on top really sold it! I followed the recipe except used Colby jack cheese…I have been trying to change things up….Thanks for a great recipe!

  • Amanda

Love this recipe. I double it and use 2lbs of ground sweet or mild Italian sausage. It’s amazing

  • Elizabeth

We love this! A family favorite for sure. I doubled everything but the sausages, and added a bunch of fresh asparagus at the end so it barely cooked, without wilting. This is the kind of dinner my kids look into the pot and they start bouncing up and down saying “oh, it’s that one stuff!” thank you!

  • Christine

Made this for lunch today and it was amazing! I used sausage with cheese, as that was what I had. I diced my tomatoes, as I didn’t have canned, and added the chicken stock to the tomatoes to compensate for the extra juice of the tomatoes. As my husband won’t eat anything with a bite, I eliminated the red chilli peppers & and only used half the amount of the garlic. Am looking forward to using all the ingredients next time.

  • Don Rawding

My wife has been cooking for me now for over 55 years and she is getting “a bit fed up with it” so I said I would try to cook a meal for us. This looked reasonably easy so I tried it. Couldn’t get Red Pepper Flakes so used cayenne pepper, and forgot the salt and pepper in the rush. Turned out very well to say it was only my second or so attempt at cooking in half a century. Too much for the two of us but the rest has been frozen for later. I think I may have the cooking bug. Thank you for this.

  • Rich H

Wow! Absolutely delicious. Will make again for sure! Never added dry pasta to a dish without first cooking the pasta but . . . worked fine. One pan? What’s not to love. Quick, economical, delicious. Pinned it!

  • Sandy

Was looking for a smoked sausage recipe that did not use pierogies, potatoes, or cabbage…….came upon this one. OMG, this is so delicious! And simple! Made it exactly as written, only doubled to feed 4 boys…..this is definitely a keeper, and one I will make for potlucks!
