Rethink Holiday Generosity

Sharing is caring!

The holiday season is falling quickly upon us. I’m almost in disbelief. I am looking forward to it. There are so many beautiful things about the holiday season that really liven our spirits and make the harshness of winter feel warm and cheerful with the good company of family and friends. It is a time for travel, when even those farthest away make plans to go home and spend time together. It is a generous time, and can I just say it’s a little stressful?

I love it, but it is a lot in a short period of time. If you’re like me, you start planning for it even in the beginning of the year, just to help cut back on some of the anxiety that will inevitably hit us come Black Friday. The pressure of the season is undeniable. Genuine generosity becomes a challenge as it is easy to feel as though a certain amount is expected and we try to hit targets and ring bells in an attempt to succeed at the holiday spirit.

It’s a trap that even the most well-meaning and truly kind fall into, because none of us wants to be viewed as a scrooge. I am most certainly not a Scrooge, but I am budget savvy; and it is my hope that you will be prepared to enter this season with financial confidence so that you can have that presence of mind, body and spirit to contribute quality time and memories with your family and friends. Overspending creates a cloud that looms over the best holiday moments. Giving Presence in a meaningful way creates priceless moments that also build financial confidence. Something as simple as bringing donuts to work before everyone heads out for vacation, or caroling, or taking the family for a stroll through Christmas lights can enhance your holiday experience and create untainted memories.

That’s why I have partnered up with Sun Trust Bank to help rethink generosity with OnUp.com and bring you tips on how to prevent overspending and be financially confident so you can truly enjoy the love and togetherness that only this season could inspire. It has gotten harder to fight the commercialism of the season than it used to be. At least it has for me. We all know it is a commercial season, but I don’t think there is as much push back, or embrace of the simple moments that are sung about in songs like “Sleigh Ride” and “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.” My goal and my wish for everybody this year is to shift your focus onto having the time of my life with my family.
