How to Store Fruit to Keep Fresher Longer

Sharing is caring!

Buying fruit for some can be a guessing game. Is it ripe now? How long will it stay ripe? And many of us end up throwing fruit away without eating it because we buy too much and just don’t have time to eat it all before it goes bad. Below are some tips on

Berries

Help your berries last a little longer by storing them in a single layer. This way the juices won’t leak onto the other berries.

Oranges and Tangerines/Lemons and Limes/Grapefruit

You can keep these citrus fruits in the fridge for several weeks. Or if you prefer them warm they can sit out at room temperature for just a couple weeks.

Bananas

Some of you may have learned the hard way that keeping a banana in the fridge will turn the skin black. So store them at room temperature and away from direct sunlight and heat. You can keep bananas fresher longer by wrapping the stems in plastic wrap.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes should be kept stem side down and out of the fridge until they are fully ripe.

Apples

Apples are a great one to buy in large quantities because they will last up to six weeks in the fridge.

Melons and Cataloupes

If a melon is not ripe when you purchase it, store it at room temperature until it is ripe, then keep in the fridge for up to 10 days. The exception is watermelon, which can last up to four days in the fridge but only if wrapped in plastic or foil, or stored in an air-tight container.

Cherries and Grapes

Cherries and grapes can last up to a week in the fridge in a plastic bag. But don’t wash them until they are ready to eat to keep them at their peak the longest.

Pineapple

Pineapple that has been cut up will not last too long, so plan accordingly. Once cut up you can store in the fridge for up to four days but make sure it is wrapped tightly in foil or plastic wrap, or stored in an air-tight container.
