The Truth About My Twin Pregnancy Complications

Sharing is caring!

I finally feel comfortable spilling the news

THE TWINS ARE HERE!

They actually were born almost 2 weeks ago on July 2nd – I am going to have more posts about all the delivery details, names, and photos in other posts. This post is meant to explain the situations that caused me to go silent about the pregnancy.

I mentioned in this post HERE – that there were some situations that popped up which caused me to go silent on my twin pregnancy. I am happy to report that the situations have resolved itself and I explain below what the situations were.

Situation 1:

I had talked about on Facebook and posts about my blood pressure and swelling. Well between week 35 and week 36 I gained 9 pounds in one week. When I went in for my check up on June 30th my blood pressure was 145/93 with protein in my urine. Long story short I developed preeclampsia – “ preeclampsia  – can impair kidney and liver function, and cause blood clotting problems, pulmonary edema (fluid on the lungs), seizures and, in severe forms or left untreated, maternal and infant death“. On July 2nd I had to have an unplanned c-section. The situation arose AFTER the twins were born. I went in for a check up last week and my blood pressure is still very high – usually blood pressure goes down after delivery. Not only that I still have protein in my urine – you can still develop preeclampsia after delivery so I have been closely watched that it does not happen to me – having it happen would be considered rare. As of right now I have hypertention and medication hopefully will help with it.

The REAL situation:

Though my hypertention was an important reason the MAIN reason is having to do with my son. After birth we noticed that my son ( even though he was larger of the two) was having issues – everyone noticed. After a couple of days of struggling he was admitted to the NICU and stayed there for the longest 9 days of my life. It was my worst fear to leave one of my babies at the hospital while I went home. I felt ( and still feel guilty) that my body failed him – he really needed a couple more weeks to mature in me and because of my body ( with my preeclampsia) he was born too early and suffered because of it. This guilt really caused me to shut down and not talk about what was going on – but I am happy to report as of yesterday he is home and doing well.

I waited to say anything because we did not know how it situation would play out.

I will be posting tomorrow twin photos and names!

Hon.your body did not fail him. What happened to him, happened for a reason. It may not show up now, but it will and you will be saying..”ohh thank goodness for this because otherwise we might have never known about….. what ever it is. It is never your bodies fault. God doesn’t make mistakes, remember that. ..so happy that they are finally here and I am so looking forward to the pictures.

God Bless you and them. Been there, did that, 35 years and 10 mos ago. I’m happy to report my single is a big grown up man today and just fine. Your two will be marvelous too once you all recover.

Prayers for continued health and happiness.

My 3rd had to syay in longer than me due to severe jaundice. It wasso hard leaving him and post c-section meant i couldnt drive myself to and from hospital to be with him. You didn’t fail him in anyway dont let that thought take root.

Your body didn’t fail him! That’s pretty much for term for a multiple pregnancy! My twin girls were born on July 1, 12 years ago! I first went into labor at 28 weeks and was halfway dilated by the time I went from the drs office to the hospital….15 min away. They were able to stop labor but kept me in the hospital on bedrest since i was so dilated. I lasted another 4 weeks. Nurses said nobody ever lasted that long being that far dilated. Had c-section at 32 weeks. Babies were 3lbs 5oz and 3lbs 15oz. They both stayed in the NICU for 3 weeks. I’m sure it was stressful for you, sounds like they were in good hands. Try not to stress and worry too much. Congratulations!

My BP went up with my fourth pregnancy the day I delivered. Never came down, on medication for the next 21 years. All is fine. Don’t fret just enjoy those babies. There are wonderful mess for HTN.

  • Janice

My firstborn son was in the NICU for the first 10 days after birth as well. I, too had an unplanned c section…everything was very hard and traumatic…
I understand a little of your feelings…may you be comforted and blessed….

Thank God you and your babies are finally ok. God works in His own time. Stop the guilt trip because you are truly blessed. Praise the Lord

  • Courtney

Congratulations on your precious babies!! I developed preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome with my first. She was born at 35 weeks and then developed pneumonia. She was in the NICU for 3 weeks. I had to leave the hospital without her so I completely understand your feelings. My blood pressure stayed high for a couple weeks after delivery but eventually went back to normal.

So glad things are looking up. Hopefully you will be feeling healthy, safe and secure in your new role as Momma!

  • Brenda

Congratulations. My daughter developed preeclampsia at 32 weeks with her first. Since there was a warning the doctor gave her a shot to help the baby’s lungs develop. At 33 weeks she developed full blown HELP syndrome and C Section it was. The baby spent 2 weeks in NICU. She spent 4 or 5 days in ICU. It was a terrorizing time but now that baby is nearly 3 years old and they are going through the potty training blues. I hope your BP gets lower and all are healthy and happy.

I was 4 weeks early, under 5 pounds, and had to stay in the neonate unit 2 weeks when I was born 30.5 years ago. (I couldn’t suck, which was more of a problem back then.) I came home, gained weight, and turned out fine. You and your son are in excellent company– welcome to the problem baby club!

  • Amanda Alvarado

YAY!!! Congrats even if it wasn’t as planned!!! You made it so much further than most pregnant with twins so don’t beat yourself up about it – it happens to moms pregnant with singles too!

  • Sue

I had preeclampsia just before my son was born. That was 34 years ago. I was in the hospital for ten days and then had a visiting nurse for a month. He was and is fine. You need to take good care of YOU so you can take care of the twins. Make sure you say yes to offers of help. Even without preeclampsia those first months of being a mom are exhausting. Congrats on your twins. You have years of joy ahead of you!

  • Sandi King

I went through that with only one baby. We both almost died, so they took her – 9 weeks early. 2lbs, 5oz. She is now27, and is a talented comic artist. She had no complications, but I had to leave the hospital without her. She was in NICU for 31 days for her to grow. Glad you are all ok. The BP will probably come down as your weight comes down. Enjoy your blessings!!

I am thrilled that things are better. I am going to say this, and it is something I deal with regularly as a single mom and that guilt. Motherhood is full of guilt. We can never do enough, say enough or be enough. Eventually I have had to let go and just be my son’s mom. We are all doing the best we can and for every mom that is different. So please be kind to yourself for motherhood and parenthood are truly difficult. It is the best, hardest thing you will ever do. What matters most is that you love your children fiercely and teach them that we are all human and the rest will be okay. Just definitely not perfect.

You absolutely did not fail him, although I know exactly why you feel that way. I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to leave to hospital without one of your babies, but I’m so glad you have them both now!

  • Conijean

Congratulations to you, Eric and Watson on the two new additions to your family. I’m glad all your loves are under one roof with you!

  • Lauralee Hensley

Praying your hypertension will resolve soon and that you’ll no longer need medication for it. I also pray that both the babies will excel and have no long term residual delays due to the need for early delivery and additional assistance for one of them. God Bless you and your family. Take time to heal.

  • Michelle Zajac

I completely understand how you felt/ feel my son who’s birthday happens to be 7/2 was born 4 weeks early by emergency c-section (because I was contracting). My son being born premature weighing in at 7lbs 2oz didn’t have strong enough lungs and was in the NICU for a week after he was born, he suffered a collapsed lung due to his complications also. I didn’t get to hold my baby til he was 5 days old and til this day I baby him and worry when he’s coughing, even though he turned 8 this year. That fear and guilt never goes away but you must try to not think about it and enjoy him send his sister being home and healthy. Congrats

  • Ami

Congratulations!! I am so happy that you and those precious bundles of joy are doing well!

BTW, July 2nd is a very good birthday, that’s when my Mom was born!!
