Chemistry is the study of matter and how it interacts with our environment. The matter is anything that has shape and occupies space. Everything you can see or touch is made of tiny particles called atoms. Chemistry tries to understand matter from an atomic point of view; this is why it is applied in almost everything we interact with in our daily lives.

Chemistry focuses on atoms and electrons and how they interact with each other when they mix up. The interaction of atoms and electrons is applicable mainly in physics. An example is how energy is produced. In biology, chemistry focuses on how organic molecules interact within our bodies. The following are ways in which chemistry is applicable in our daily life.

Five ways in which chemistry is applicable in our lifestyle

In our daily food

Nutritionists usually advise people on what to eat and what not to eat. Food comprises chemical compounds that make carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and fiber. There are some fruits that, when taken, can be poisonous because of the chemical compounds they contain.

Preservation of food

Food preservation can be done using a refrigerator. However, people use chemical compounds to store food products for a long time. An example is sodium nitrate and potassium nitrates which are used to preserve meat products. The compounds work by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi.

Preparation of drugs

Organic chemistry is the most applicable branch of chemistry that is applied in the preparation of drugs. Pharmacy students must know how molecules interact with our body organs. An example is antacids which neutralize the acid in our gut. To prepare these drugs, one must know the structure of a base and the PH conditions for these drugs.

In addition, medicine is also applicable to medicine; this is why students taking chemistry must study some organic chemistry. However, most chemistry students find it difficult to do organic chemistry homework because it is very broad and complex.


The interaction between different molecules gives rise to specific characteristics that can be useful. An example is the preparation of soaps. The soaps we use every day is as a result of the knowledge obtained in chemistry. Soap is prepared using chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide with fats. The interaction with water removes dirt from our clothes.

Since the pandemic, people have been asked to sanitize. Sanitizers are made of alcohol called ethanol because alcohol is very effective in killing germs. However, the alcohol must be mixed with water to dilute its concentration.

In fuel

Chemistry is the product that propels the country’s economy because it produces energy. It provides energy for machines such as automotive cars, jets, helicopters, etc. However, the process used in the product of energy can be explained using a chemical reaction. For example, gasoline l is composed of octane, which undergoes combustion to give carbon dioxide water and energy. The energy produced is what is used in machines.

Textile industry

Wool, silk, and cotton fiber are used in the textile industry to make clothes. For clothes to be appealing to buyers, they must undergo several processes such as dyeing, scouring, and bleaching. Chemicals are used in all these processes. Hydrogen peroxide and soda ash are examples of chemicals used in ding clothes.

Peacekeeping and war

Military personnel usually use chemical weapons in combat. The simile one is tear gas used to disperse people. It is made of bromoacetone which irritates the mucus membrane in the eyes, nose, and mouth. Lastly, elements such as Plutonium-239 and uranium-235 are common in manufacturing nuclear weapons.
