My Honest Opinion about Instagram Stories
I vividly recall posting my very first Instagram Story: I was leaving for a quick weekend in the country, and I wanted to post the view without cluttering up my regular feed. I tossed up a shot of the scenery, put a silly sticker on it (I really did use a lot more stickers back then, tbh), and tapped “Share.” Little did I know how much I would grow to adore Stories down the line.
Unlike posts that remain on your page, Stories vanish after 24 hours. Initially, I found that a bit strange—like, why would I work on something that’s gone so quickly? And then it struck me that it’s precisely because it doesn’t last very long that it’s so captivating. People actually hurry to view Stories since they don’t wish to miss out (let’s be honest, we all despise FOMO).
Why I Believe That Stories Are Important
They’re Like Live Updates
If I’m out at a party or debuting a new product (yes, I do sometimes sell hand-made mugs, and they’re actually pretty adorable), I can update what I’m doing as it happens. More personal.
Basic Interaction
We can include polls, Q&A boxes, or even fun quizzes (I once conducted a “Guess My Favorite Snack” poll—most listed pizza, but I’m a complete sushi addict!). It’s really just an easy way to engage with followers. If your followers are few and want to increase the viewer number of your Stories, you can try top-quality TopTierSMM packages.
Relaxed, Not Perfect
My feed posts sometimes appear very curated because they have to represent my brand’s aesthetic. I can be a bit more chill with Stories. If I’m working on a mug and I goof up one of the handles, I can show that behind-the-scenes element. It’s real and people like that vulnerability.
Regular Posts vs. Stories (In My Opinion)
- 24-Hour Thing: Stories disappear, so you can treat them as lighthearted experiments. Mess up? Don’t worry about it; it will be forgotten in a jiffy.
- Interactive Features: As opposed to regular posts, I have the ability to add polls, countdowns, and adorable GIF stickers. It’s a little playground for creativity.
- Less Polished: I care less about lights and angles. Which, ironically, allows for more natural reactions from my audience.
- Right-Now Feels: If I have a notice—a sale on my mugs, for example—I put it in Stories. Everybody sees it immediately. With a regular post, the algorithm may not show it to certain people.
The Benefits of Using Instagram Stories
Here are some benefits of IG Stories; check them out and start using this feature effectively.
Brand Awareness & Engagement
By showing up consistently in Stories, I kinda stay on my followers’ radar. They see my handle at the top of their feed daily, so they remember me and my coffee-themed mugs.
Generating Traffic
The link sticker is my best friend. I usually add a link to my webstore or blog so that people can jump over and look at new stuff with one click. It’s a better trick than you might imagine (though you have to remind them it’s there or else they won’t even notice).
Instant Interaction
Going live for a quick Q&A or using the question sticker allows me to discover what individuals desire. I have even discovered my customers would like more travel-inspired mug designs simply by asking a poll. Completely unexpected but really useful.
Planning My Stories (When I Actually Plan Them)
I’m a sucker for consistency, so I use the same color scheme on text and doodles. It helps people identify my work.
Sort-of Content Calendar
I’m not always the most structured, but it keeps me sane to have some sort of rough plan. Like, I know I’m going to do a new mug design on Monday, behind-the-scenes on Wednesday, and then possibly a poll or Q&A on Friday.
Know Who’s Watching
I’ve found that most of my followers are night owls. Posting around 8 PM my time gets the most views. It’s trial and error and checking the insights.
Cool Features I Like to Mess With
- Stickers: Quizzes, polls, countdown timers (these are excellent for building anticipation for a new collection).
- Music & GIFs: I’m a sucker for a catchy Beyonce song or a humorous dancing cat GIF.
- Links: As I said, that link sticker is a game-changer for sales for me.
- Hashtags & Locations: I put them in occasionally so new individuals can locate me (though I don’t do it too much so that it doesn’t seem spammy).
Some Creative Story Ideas (That I’ve Tried or Will Try)
- Behind-the-Scenes: The best part about everyone’s favorites is watching how I paint all the mugs. I get the most DMs from them.
- Product Reveals: I’ll tease out a new design by posting part images. Leaves them wondering.
- User-Generated Content: If someone tags me with my mug in their hand, I re-post it (after asking them for permission, of course).
- Quick Tutorials: I am not a professional teacher, but demonstrating a few quick painting pointers can be entertaining.
- Polls & Q&As: Crowd-sourcing design concepts for the future. Or, you know, simply annoyingly entertaining each other with useless trivia.
Story Highlights (So the Good Stuff Sticks Around)
Stories get lost quickly, but I figured out a way to utilize Highlights so others can binge my older content:
- Organize: I have highlights like “New Mugs,” “DIY Tips,” and “Our Workshop.”.
- Covers: I designed tiny icon covers that match my brand colors. It’s kinda cute and neat.
Timing & Frequency of Posting
Best Times
Each person’s audience is unique. Mine reacts most to the night, but your audience could be morning scrollers. Try it out.
Spontaneous vs. Scheduled
I do a combination of both: sometimes I will have a completely scripted set of Stories, and other times I improvise and post my daily morning coffee routine.
Don’t Go Overboard
Believe me, I used to post like 20+ Stories per day, and my interaction slowed down. People got exhausted. Now I attempt to keep it at 5-7 slides at a time.
Instagram Stories continue to evolve. They began with the ability to post photos and videos only, and now they include AR filters, music, link stickers, and who knows what next. Best strategy? Be curious and simply try stuff. If you mess up (and believe me, I mess up constantly), it’s gone in 24 hours or so. No big deal!
FAQ
How frequently should I post?
My aim is at least a few stories per day—sufficient to stay conspicuous but not enough to be troublesome.
Best time to post?
Depends on your audience. Mornings or evenings work best for me. Check your Insights for clues.
Do Stories actually make my brand increase?
For certain. They keep you front of mind, drive engagement, and can drive traffic wherever you want it to go.
Can I tell who has seen my Stories?
Yes, you receive a list of individuals who’ve looked at each Story. (I’m sometimes amazed at who’s watching them!)
How do I boost engagement on my Stories?
Be interactive. Ask questions, take polls, and answer DMs whenever you can.
Are Stories preferable to normal posts?
They’re both good for their respective strengths. Tales are in the moment and live; blogs are more enduring and edited. Use both! Hope my own ramblings (and the odd typo) make you see just how incredible Instagram Stories are. If you’re still unsure, just take the plunge! There’s literally nothing to lose—your content is going to disappear anyway soon, so you may as well have fun with it. And who knows? Perhaps you’ll discover an entirely new method of engaging with your followers, promoting your brand, or simply revealing what you’re working on a daily basis. Take a spin and see where your creativity takes you!
