10 Budget-Friendly Tips for Enjoying Renaissance Faires
Over the past few months, I’ve had the chance to visit the Oregon Renaissance Faire three times and the Canterbury Faire in Silverton, OR twice each time with either my daughter Gwendolyn or my son Lawson. We had a blast, but I also learned a few tricks to make the day more enjoyable (and more affordable). Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned faire-goer, these tips will help you make the most of your day.

1. Try Trinket Trading for the Kids
This was hands-down my kids’ favorite part. I made small trinkets ahead of time (I’ll share what I made soon) and kept them in a little baggie. Throughout the day, my kids traded them with other children and vendors. Each time, they ended up with around 30 little treasures. It’s a great way to keep them engaged without spending a fortune.

2. Bring Cash for Food
Not every food vendor takes cards, and some charge a fee for card payments. Having cash ready makes the process smoother and helps you stick to your budget.

3. Eat Early to Avoid the Lines
Faire food is part of the fun, but those lines can get long fast. We’ve learned to eat early, before the rush, so we can spend more time exploring.
4. Tip the Performers
Street performers, musicians, and actors make the experience magical. If you enjoyed their show, drop a tip in their hat. It supports their craft and shows your appreciation.
5. Watch Out for “Too Good to Be True” Souvenirs
Some vendors sell mass-produced items you could find on Amazon for much less. If you want something truly unique, look for handmade pieces from artisan booths.
6. Wear Comfortable Shoes
Faires often have uneven ground, gravel paths, or grassy areas. Cute shoes are tempting, but you’ll thank yourself later if you go for comfort.

7. Plan Your Budget Before You Go
It’s easy to get caught up in the atmosphere. Set a budget for food, souvenirs, and activities before you arrive. This way, you can spend without worrying later.
8. Check the Schedule
Most faires post their performance and event schedules online. Knowing what shows and parades you want to see will help you plan your route and not miss your favorites.

9. Dress for the Weather (and the Theme)
Layers are your friend – especially in Oregon, where the weather can change quickly. If you have a Renaissance-style outfit, wear it! It adds to the fun and helps you feel part of the action.
10. Bring a Small Backpack or Crossbody Bag
You’ll want your hands free for food, drinks, and taking photos. A small, secure bag keeps essentials close without getting in the way.
Each trip I’ve taken has been a little different, but with these tips, they’ve all been stress-free, budget-friendly, and full of great memories. Whether it’s laughing with the kids over a turkey leg or watching a sword fight in the sunshine, the Renaissance Faire is worth every minute.
