Must Read! Budget Savvy Diva’s Mail Has Been Suspended ?!

Sharing is caring!

As I write this my hubby is trying to get some answers and I thought I would ask all of you to help as well.

I get mail. I get A TON of mail. Yesterday I went the mailbox ( I live in an apartment house with over 300 apartments)  and it was empty – totally weird but I thought maybe it was an off day.

Today I sent my hubby to get the mail – it was empty. I think it has been a few years since I had a two days in a row without mail ( excluding holidays and weekends)

So my hubby went to the office to ask if the mail had been delivered and this is what they said.

“The Postal Service has been suspended to “….. Apartments “

WHAT!!!! The suspension is to the whole Apartment Complex

We called the post office and they do not know anything about this

What do you think is going on? What should I do ? 🙁

Report your apartment complex to the authorities and to the Post Office. If the post office knows nothing about it – it is illegal to mess with the U.S. Postal Service.

Sounds like a Lazy post person… That doesnt sound right…Maybe someone is stealing your mail at the apt complex??

We’ve had our mail suspended but we could never get an answer as of why. I think because of what I do, they thought I was doing something illegal. So Mom sent Dad to the post office to figure out why we weren’t getting our mail and they gave us a number to call in case it continues for the next week or so but the next day, we started getting our mail. My best idea would be to call or go to the post office to maybe get a reason or a number to call. If they are unable to give you a reason, your best bet would be to try and contact your local postmaster. They may tell you what is going on. I hope this helps!

OMGoodness!!! I’ve never heard of anything like this before. I would definitely be demanding some answers from the office especially if the Post Office has no clue about this happening. Good luck and keep us all posted.

Never heard of that before. Try looking at the postal service web page faq’s, maybe it will be listed there. Good luck!

I heard about something like that in the town where I live. The mail lady did not want to deliver to the apartment complex because she was told that one of the apartments had bed bugs and she did not want to get them. This was sometime last year.

Something similar happened to us, when we lived in an apartment (so it has been about 5 years ago now). We didn’t get mail for about a week. I continued to inquire and they eventually said that it was a mix-up on their end. The next week we received a ton of mail. We were lucky.(The only thing that comes to mind is that there may be an investigation going on, but highly unlikely).

idk.. I think the USPS is going downhill.. at christmas I was expecting a package but it still wasnt there almost 2 weeks after it was sent. Turns out they crossed off my name and changed it to my daughters name and sent it to her in a different town… and wanted to charge me an additional $10 for shipping it there!!

The whole apartment complex? WOW! I would freak out and search for answers. Can you pick up your mail from the post office? I would be concerned as to what is happening to it while service is suspended. That is total BS.

  • Lana Baker

I get a lot of mail, too. One day without mail is a very strange anomaly. Two days without mail is almost an apocalypse.

  • tracy voit

This happened to us at our old house our mail didn’t run till sometime 7 oclock at night and I knew that stuff should have came I called the post office for the next week I got mail straight but it was from 3 months prior. We no longer had that postman.

  • Lisa

If this continues with no answers from the Post Office I would call a local news station. I have heard of this happening on complete streets due to loose dogs.

I would go into the PO and talk to a supervisor. Then ask them what you should do if they really know nothing about it. It is illegal to tamper with the mail. I would also ask a neighbor or two if they have also had their mail “suspended”. I would also talk to the apartment manager again and find out what they know and let them know that if the postal service didn’t actually put this hold on mail, it is a federal offense to tamper and you will be pursuing it legally. Good luck. That is really bizarre.

Tape a flyer to your mailboxes at the apartment asking if anyone else was having problems with their mail being suspended and leave a way for them to contact you if you are comfortable with that. If not I would ask the neighbors (and those that I’m comfortable with) if they had received their mail and if they had I’d be getting to the bottom of it with either the management of the complex and/or the post office. Or another idea with the flyer is to just simply state that according to the complex, mail has been suspended to the apartments and advise people to complain to the management there and at the post office. If enough people complain they might resolve it quickly. I’d probably even tell my complex management that my rent money was in the mail. LOL I’d probably ask for a reduction in my rent amount if my mail service wasn’t an option anymore seeing as how you’d have to get a post office box and that cost money as well as the gas to and from to check it or drop off mail. I just find it hard to believe they have suspended mail for everyone there. I think they just want to take the goodies you get. ;o)

Call 1-800-275-8777. This is the Customer Service number for the Post Office. When you call in, a case number is assigned and MUST be addressed locally. You will get quicker results from this number than even going down to your Post Office. Good luck!

  • ElizaBeth

WHAT?!? Something is NOT right!! The post office just doesn’t “suspend” service. Time to go in and speak to someone in management and request their answer in writing!

  • Shavon

I didn’t think about my mail possibly being suspended, but I haven’t received so much as a piece of junk mail in the last two days as well. I don’t think I have the capacity of mail that you have, but I normally get mail EVERYDAY, be it a bill or junk. I am going to give it to tomorrow before I start asking questions.

    • Holli

I don’t know if this is the case in your situation but during the holiday season they cut a lot of the bulk mail so you won’t have as much of that coming your way around this time of year.

  • Karen Hoier

With all the talk about the cuts that are to take place with the postal service, maybe this is just the beginning.
To me this sounds kinda drastic, especially considering the size of your apartment complex. I would demand some answers from your local post office.
I hope this isnt the beginning of things to come. That would really be awful.
Good luck and keep us posted on what happens. I know I enjoy seeing whats in my mailbox everyday, just like you do.

Only time we have had our mail suspended was because our dog had gotten loose and was on the porch and the mail carrier wouldn’t deliver again until we assured them it wouldn’t happen again. My mom had mail carrier that wouldn’t deliver mail if just the storm door was the only door closed…again because of a dog in the house. Wouldn’t think that would be a problem in an apartment complex but maybe there was something else that the mail carrier felt threatened by?

  • Holli

Talk to the Postmaster at the Post Office that handles your mail. If he/she doesn’t know what is going on then that is a problem. They would know if, when, and what reason mail was suspended. I work at the post office. I’ve never heard of this happening. The only thing I can think of is if there is some reason the carrier cannot safely deliver the mail because of an issue. Even with that someone should have been told about the issue so it could be resolved. Check the news in your area to see if there is something going on with your post offices. I’m in the Northeast and they’re shutting down/moving processing centers and consolidating smaller offices. I doubt that has anything to do with your situation though.

  • Kim Newcomb

I am a supervisor in the PO. We can and do suspend service for a number of reasons……. loose dogs, sidewalks and stairs not shoveled, broken mail boxes. 2 christmases ago i shut down a whole apatemnt complex in boston because the letter carrier got beat up y gang of kids while delivering mail. Call or go down to the local PO and ask to speak with a supervisor or the Postmaster of the station. Bring the letter and ask why and what is going on. There has to be a valid reason to shut down the whole complex. Good Luck. I am off this weekend but if you need help let me know and I can try and call on monday for you. Good Luck!

  • Star Traci

It happened to my complex. I’m not sure if it’s the same problem but it seems that the USPS is cracking down on postal boxes that are deemed unsafe. We had to pick up our mail at the station for two weeks until the management office had the structure housing the boxes rebuilt. I hope you find a simple solution!

I can give you feedback…apartments do not have to abide by household rules b/c they are 150-300+ units…trust me, it STINKS to have to have a leasing consultant deliver your mail when they can be Federally sued for misdelivering. It’s not fair but I’ve tried to fix it, time & time again….no use..lawyers and ALL…you will get nowhere! They are just stating that they (USPS) will no longer be placing your mail in your box….expect chaos! sorry! 🙁

  • Nina

I’m with Lisa, report the complex and mail man to the post office. Someone might be hijacking the mail or just being lazy. Either way, they CAN NOT do that! It is a federal offense!
