Easy Home Repairs Anyone Can Do

Are you tired of depending on handymen just so you can fix basic leaks and breakdowns? Do you want to save money on small repairs? If the answer is yes, you should definitely read this article.

In this post, we’ll go through several basic repair tricks anyone can use at their home. Most of these are so simple that you’ll regret not using them earlier!

  • Clean Your Faucet

Over time, your aerator will get filled with caulk. This will interfere with normal flow, causing all sorts of headaches when you’re cleaning the dishes. Instead of causing a handyman, you can simply clean the aerator (a better option) or buy a new one.

Unscrew the piece by simply turning it counterclockwise. Fill a glass with vinegar and put the aerator inside. After 10 or 15 minutes, the caulk will be gone, and you can screw it back on. If the aerator is beyond repair or cleaning, we suggest you get a new Moen faucet aerator from Aerator.com.

  • Replace Garbage Disposal

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out your garbage disposal is malfunctioning. Clogging, leaks, unusual sounds, and power issues are all signs that you should replace the object. The most important thing here is to turn off the breaker at the very start. Make sure to turn off water as well, as you don’t need a catastrophe in your kitchen.

Ideally, you should buy the same model as you had before to avoid unnecessary adjustments. Remove the dishwasher drain and discharge tube, as well as the knockout plug. Make sure to have an assistant nearby, as garbage disposals tend to be heavy. Fix the new unit in place of the old one and put back plugs.

  • Clean Your Dishwasher

Your dishwasher filter is meant to process the food remains. As such, it will become very unhygienic after a while. Debris and grime will accumulate within it, and you’ll notice a strong odor. The good news is that it’s something you can fix easily without any tools.

First, you need to remove the bottom rack, after which you’ll remove the blade with a firm squeeze and by turning it counterclockwise. You’ll also have to remove the cylindrical filter by using a similar move. This is where most of the food accumulates, so make sure to clean it with a brush and soap.

There’s another final filter on the bottom, which looks like a large, flat piece of plastic. Pull it upward and use a brush and soap to clean it up. Return all pieces back into their place once you’re done.

  • Fix Loud Doors

If you’re tired of hearing loud bangs from doors and cabinet doors, you can fix the issue by purchasing a few drawer bumpers. You can stick them on the bottom and upper corners of the cabinet doors so they won’t slam against the cabinet basis. Just make sure both corners of the door are clean before applying bumpers.

  • Change Deck Boards

Many people are unwilling to fix their deck because they’re afraid the repairs would be too expensive. Luckily, you can fix the issue with a screwdriver and a saw. First, you need to find the boards which are causing the ruckus. Remove the screws, after which you should use the screwdriver to lift up the board and remove it from the deck.

Measure the size of the board and determine what type of wood was used. Many large stores will cut the wood for you, so you don’t have to worry about that. Alternatively, you can use a handsaw to cut it yourself. Once you have the right size, just put it back in place and screw it in.

  • Fix Drawer Slides

If your drawer slides are starting to squeak, there’s a good chance they need some lubricating. Remove the drawers from their basis and check the slides for damage. If there’s no damage to the metal, you need to wipe them clean and apply some lubricant. Just be sure to use the lubricant on both slides and rollers.

  • Paint Your Walls

Painting your walls is rather straightforward if they haven’t suffered any damage and if you’re using a single color. Start by removing the furniture from the room and protecting the floors. Cloth or old newspapers will do the trick for the floor, and we recommend using masking paper for the baseboards.

You’ll also need to remove dirt from the walls with a cleaner. This will make it easier for the paint to stick. Start by painting the ceiling, proceed with the trim, and finally, the walls (the process is a bit more complex if you’re using several colors). When doing the walls, first cover the edges and proceed with the central area.

Conclusion

Many people are reluctant to fix things around their house. However, once you repair doors or clean your faucet for the first time, you’ll realize how easy things can be. In fact, there’s a good chance you’ll start repairing most of the things by yourself, saving lots of money in the process.
