He selected 160 adults who usually consume minimal amounts of caffeine in his study. The participants observed pictures of objects before receiving a pill containing either 200 milligrams of caffeine (two espressos) or a placebo. 

When the participants returned 24 hours later, they took a memory test involving pictures they had seen previously, unseen pictures, and pictures similar but not exact, such as a seahorse with a different shape to one they had seen previously. The volunteers had to categorize them as “old,” “new,” or “similar.”

There was no difference between the two groups incorrectly differentiating between the “old” and “new” pictures. However, the group who had received caffeine was much better than the placebo group at identifying which images were “similar” rather than “old,” which Yassa says is a more difficult task.

According to Yassa, people should drink espresso before and after they’ve studied because they would get the boost either way. That’s because the process of consolidation is set to begin as soon as new memories form.
