How to Save Money on Maintaining an Electric Garage Door

Sharing is caring!

It can be quite easy to forget to look after and maintain an electric garage door if you have one. And even if you do remember, it is probably not at the top of your to do list. However, doing this is important if you want to ensure that it works properly and lasts as long as possible. For instance, the average electric garage door has a lifespan of approximately ten years, so if you look after it right and regularly maintain it, you can expect this.

Inspect it regularly

It is recommended that you inspect all parts of your electric garage door regularly – ideally every 2 to 3 months, in order to make sure that it is working properly. If you find that it is difficult to open or make a clunking sound when opening up, then this should be investigated immediately in order to ensure that the problem does not progress and get even worse. An electric garage door that is weak or damaged will potentially put the possessions being kept inside at risk of being exposed to the elements or stolen by someone. You may want to employ a professional electric garage door company to do a full and proper inspection so that they can diagnose and fix any issues identified quickly and easily.

Lubricate the moving parts

Make sure that any and all moving parts of your electric garage door are regularly and well lubricated in order to ensure that they are working and running smoothly. Dirt and grease can easily get clogged in the moving parts, causing them to jam up the mechanism, preventing them from working. This is why it is important that all of the moving parts are thoroughly cleaned with a brush with stiff bristles and then wiped down with a methylated spirit, before then applying the lubricant. If your electric garage door is making a squeaking sound when opening or closing, then this is a clear sign that lubrication is required. Any garage lubricant, such as WD40, can be used for this.

Repair the faults

If it is the case that your electric garage door has become damaged, then it is important that you repair it as soon as possible. If left to get worse, a relatively small fault can develop into something much more serious, potentially putting the contents inside your garage at risk of thieves or the elements. Additionally, it may make the electric garage door unsafe to use and may injure you when using it. Sometimes the solution can be something as simple as replacing the remote control batteries, although sometimes it can be more complex than that.

Whilst doing all of the above things can help to keep your electric garage door in good working order and make it last as long as possible, it may already be the case that your electric garage door is broken and / or not working properly and in need of Sterling Garage Door Repair.
