NEWS: Hilton Guest Suing Hotel Over 75 Cents For A Newspaper

I travel more then most people – so that means staying in many different hotels and I always find it comical how expensive everything is. In June I stayed in a hotel in Los Angeles and they had a bottle of water ( for your comfort) for $7.00 ! For $7.00 I want some gold flakes in that water. Have you ever experienced something like this?

Well it looks like someone is finally fighting back – I do want to take the stance that I think suing over $.75 ( the extra charge the man suing Hilton for ) is a bit silly but it is the sneakiness on Hilton part that is so upsetting.

When you stay at a hotel one would assume the newspaper that is placed in front of your door in the morning is free …. right?

Well not at Hilton.

Rodney Harmon, 55, of Sacramento said he visited the Hilton Garden Inn Sonoma County Airport on March 28 and saw a copy of USA Today outside his door.

“He did not request a newspaper and assumed it had been placed there by hotel staff,” said the suit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in San Francisco. Harmon didn’t realize until later that a 75-cent charge for the paper had been added to his bill.

Harmon accused Hilton of deliberately hiding the newspaper charge by describing the fee in an “extremely small font which is difficult to notice or read” on the sleeve of the room card.

What do you think about this lawsuit?

Thanks! Perez Hilton

Good for him!! So many big business’ overcharge and charge for things you had no idea you were being charged for. I say good for him for taking a stand!

A large number of hotel chains do this. They automatically charge you for the paper they place at your door. It is fairly standard now. I travel often and it is actually rare that the hotel gives you the paper for free. (I can’t recall a time that a hotel has ever given the paper for free.) To avoid the charge, all you simply need to do is request that they not put the paper at your door.

The hotel was not being sneaky. They put the notice on the sleeve for the room card–a place they knew he would have to interact with. He cannot deny that he had it in his hand. Should they have put a giant poster in his room letting him know as well?

Did he bother to ask the hotel if they would take off the charge? If not, then he should not waste taxpayer’s money by filing a lawsuit for 75 cents. Lawsuits like this cost the country a heck of a lot more than 75 cents.

I agree that it is very irritating to be unexpectedly charged for something, but people need to step into reality — nothing is free and if it appears to be so, you must ask to be sure!
