Food You Can Make from Scraps

Healthy Heart Food

I love finding ways to use the things we normally throw away. Food is no exception. There are so many ways to get uses out of the portions of food we normally just add to our trash.

Onion Skins

If you use a lot of onions, don’t throw out those skins! Save them in the freezer until the next time you make stock or soup. They can add so much flavor, but just don’t forget to remove them before eating.

Leftover Bread

If your house is like mine, nobody likes to eat the “heel” of the bread. Use yours to make yummy croutons. Save in the freezer and when you are making a salad make some fresh croutons but cutting into small squares and put in sauté pan with a little oil. Then just sprinkle with some garlic salt or another favorite spice.

Broccoli Stalks

Many of us just like to eat the florets of the broccoli. But don’t throw out the stalks. You can slice them up and use them in a stir fry or just sauté them and eat them as a side dish.

Carrot Tops

Did you know that you can steam or sauté carrot tops? Next time make yours into a great side dish. Or add to your other smoothie ingredients for a little green in your beverage.

Apple Peels

If you or your kids do not like eating the peels of apples, you can roast them for a snack, or add them to your smoothie.

Beef Broth or Chicken Stock

Whether you have a big beef bone or scraps to make into beef broth, or leftover rotisserie chicken you can turn into chicken broth, don’t throw them out before getting all you can out of them!

Watermelon Rinds

If you eat a lot of watermelon you have to try pickled watermelon rinds. They are really easy to make and delicious.
