4 Tips for Aging Seniors

As we enter our senior years, many of us need to face a number of challenging issues. These are problems that we all face as we near the end of our lives. Here are four preparation tips for seniors to keep in mind to help the aging process go a little smoother and a bonus – cost of walk-in tub for seniors.

 

  1. Decide on Your Future Living Arrangements 

 

One of the decisions we all need to make at some point is where we’ll live once we’re no longer able to care for ourselves as well as we can right now. There are several options to consider: 

 

    • Home healthcare: Choosing private nursing care at home allows you to maintain your independence as long as possible. You’ll get to enjoy the comforts of your own home while making sure your medical needs are being met. This is an ideal option if you have family members who live with you or are nearby. It also tends to be the most affordable option in most cases. 
  • Assisted living facilities: This may be the right solution for people who need help but don’t require as much care as those who live in nursing homes. In some cases, you may be able to still come and go as you’re able to, while other assisted living facilities are designed for those who require more care. 
  • Nursing homes: This can be an ideal option for those who have physical or mental disabilities that impact their ability to live independently. Patients with dementia or Alzheimer’s might benefit from this option. 

 

When it comes to your future living circumstances, there is no right or wrong answer. It ultimately depends on your own circumstances, health, wants, and needs. Due to unforeseen medical issues, some people might graduate through all three options over the course of their lifetime. 

 

  1. Keep up on Your Health Issues 

 

Life is fragile. Taking care of yourself can only help extend your life — and improve your quality of life. It’s important to follow a well-balanced diet, 

 

No matter what medical conditions you’re suffering from, it’s important to keep up with any treatments your doctor prescribes you. Be sure to take your medications for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes. All seniors should consider doing brain exercises for memory — especially if they have a diagnosis or higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s or dementia. 

 

  1. Make Sure Your Home Is Accessible 

 

If your plan is to age in place and opt for home healthcare, it’s important to make sure your home is accessible to wheelchairs and walkers. Consider adding a wheelchair ramp to the front porch and widening the doorways (if necessary). You might also look into installing walk-in showers or a shower rail, higher toilets, and toilet handlebars. 

 

It’s also important to take fall risk into consideration. Consider upgrading to non-slip tiles or carpeted floors and strategically place area rug throughout your home. 

 

  1. Consider Your Finances 

 

While you’re still of a sound mind, it’s important to determine who will be in charge of your finances. In many cases, it’s common to choose a child or another trusted family member or close friend to handle your affairs, including all of your bills and accounts, when you’re unable to do so. In some cases, if you don’t have a trusted family member or friend, you might need to hire someone to do this on your behalf. This is one of the most important aging preparation tips to keep in mind. 

 

These are just some preparation tips for seniors. Doing some planning ahead of time can help ensure that you enjoy your last years of life comfortably and on your own terms. Although things can always interfere with our life goals, it’s ideal to have a plan in place and make arrangements before it’s too late.
