5 Strange But Amazing Uses For Apples

April 24, 2012

Even though Apples are extremely yummy to eat there are many other uses for them.

1) Keeps Cake Fresh – Store cakes with a half of an apple – it will keep the cake nice and moist. Simple.
2) Roasting The Perfect Chicken – Stuff a Whole Chicken with an apple to keep it moist while cooking ( discard apple afterwards) – this is one of Budget Savvy Diva’s cooking secrets.
3) Loosen Up That Brown Sugar – Simple place a apple wedge in a bag of hardened brown sugar and tightly seal the bag and wait a day or two and it will be soft again ( SCORE!)
4) Ripen Tomatoes – Place unripened tomatoes with a apple in a paper bag for a couple of days.
5) Too much salt? – If your soup or stew is too salty simply add some apple wedges for 10 minutes. The apple will soak up excess salt.

How cool are these tips :) Enjoy!!!

Thanks, but do you peel the apple for the chicken or leave the skin on it?

Also, I think on #4 you meant “couple of days” not coupon. ;)

Softening brown sugar is a neat one… you can do the same thing with a piece of bread in the bag/jar/whatever.

I’ve heard about using marshmallows in brown sugar also.

I’ve never bothered with an apple in the brown paper bag for tomatoes – just the tomatoes in the bag.

And I’ve heard the last hint about over salted soups/stews only with potatoes.

It is chemically proven that apples produce a chemical from their skin that ripens anything in its path! A dark place just decomposes it. Try this on Bananas, Avocados, Apples, Limes, Tomatoes, anything that needs to be ripened.

the apple soaks up the salt.. potatoes add starch which causes the soup to thicken.

Ok I have one too … When I make a cake instead of using OIL I use APPLESAUCE, it comes out so much yummier and you save the fat its a win win =D this was passed down from my mama… Happy mothers day!!!!

I substitute applesauce in place of oil too! Another mom thing as well! OH SO YUMMY!

I use diet white soda instead of the oil and eggs. You use the cake mix and a 12 oz can of diet sprite or 7up or any cheap diet white soda mix and bake according to directions. the only calories you will have is the cake mix.

I had a terrible odor in my carpet in my car and the guy at the car wash suggested cutting up an apple and throwing it under my seat. I did it and the smell went away amazingly quick! It was a spilled milk smell and in the heat of summer, I can’t even tell you how horrible that was!!!

The apple doesn’t go bad?

Reply

Roxanne April 19, 2013 at 7:08 pm

My grandad used to do that. The apple just used to shrivel up eventually rather than go bad. I don’t know why.

Apples are also good for relieving Indigestion.
Just eat one after eating a meal or when you get
indigestion… Acid in apple counters stomach acid.
Have an apple before bed to avoid acid reflux while sleeping.
Apple sauce does not work… It Has to be a whole apple.

If your a smoker cutting up apples and putting them around your house ( preferably in window seals and closets, even in cars it will remove the smell of smoke over night. we use to have the maids do this when I worked for a hotel. If someone smoked in a non smoking room. They would cut up apples and leave them all over the room over night. The smell was always gone. Also works in basements and storm cellars, dish washers and refrigerators.

Never store apples with carrots. The apples cause the carrots to taste bitter.

You could also put a large marshmallow in brown sugar. It works great!

Natalie December 13, 2012 at 7:39 pm

They also work great to ripen avocados quickly. Just put one in a bag with the avocado and it ripens so fast. I put mine in in the morning and it was ready to eat for dinner that night

You can use a potato for reducing salt in soups and stews too! I was quite young when my mom did this one time and I’ve always remembered it!

Why do you say to throw away the apple after cooking it in the chicken? We do this all the time with our turkey for Thanksgiving but my dad eats the apple with ice cream for dessert, we don’t throw it away. I’m just wondering if there is something I don’t know about it! =)
