How to Treat a Sunburn

If you spent too much time out in the sun this summer without the proper amount of sunblock, there are a couple remedies you can do at home to make it heal faster and feel better more quickly.

As soon as possible you should take an over the counter anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or aspirin. It will help the pain PLUS stop inflammation.

After you can do one of the following:

1) Cover affected areas with aloe. Aloe that has been refrigerated can feel even better.

2) Soak in a cool bath or take a cool shower.

3) Apply a cool compress to the affected area. Add milk to ice water and then soak a clean cloth in it. The fat, protein and pH of milk have a soothing anti-inflammatory effect on the skin.

I actually used the “milk & ice water” method on my 6 year old and it worked wonders!! No pain, no peeling, no worries 🙂

I used aloe right after a bad sunburn and made myself so sick. A medic had me wash off the aloe. He said it’s better a day or 2 after but not right away. It can form a barrier that actually holds the heat in. He had me do the milk bath and it was amazing!!! I just soaked a rag in straight milk and laid it on my sunburn.

I use the black tea method. Do this right before bedtime. Brew BLACK TEA, let it cool until it’s tepid or lukewarm. Using the teabag, dab (do not wipe) the brewed tea onto sunburn. Let it dry, then go to bed. In the morning, you should take a shower with cool – not hot – water, washing off the tea. Be careful not to wipe the treated areas.
