How to Clean a Toilet With Coke

You know those icky toilet rings and plain old stains your toilet bowl get – well if you are in a pinch grab a can of coke.

All the acids ( like citric acid) and carbon break down stains.

Simple pour the can of coke into the toilet and leave it over night ( or at least one hour).

You should not have to brush before you flush the coke 😉 But I would do a little scrubbing if there is a difficult stain.

It’s also effective for removing corrosion on car battery terminals… my husband and his friends have done that for years.

I would use something clear like 7up, tried this a few years ago and the coke actually stained.

And we put this is our bodies…..yuck!

lilian September 29, 2012 at 1:58 am

@renee – it’s just because its acid… It’s like how vinegar removes really hard water build up/calcium build up but its totally fine to put into our food

Jennifer November 11, 2012 at 1:00 am

Makes you rethink drinking that stuff!

Mere November 29, 2012 at 7:23 am

See @Lillian’s comment. ^ I assume you have no qualms with vinegar in your salad dressing.

Does diet coke work?

Cleaner Jobs December 10, 2012 at 7:12 am

i hate coke for this reason

Natalie January 28, 2013 at 9:39 am

Awesome! If I had a can of coke sitting around, this is definitely what I’d do with it because I wouldn’t drink it haha.

Eva March 25, 2013 at 3:52 pm

Did you know you can also do this with the tablets used for cleaning dentures? Works like a charm and the price for a tube full of tablets is probably the same if not cheaper then a can of coke and this will last you longer!
Just put 1 or 2 in the toilet and let it stay for an hour or overnight and your good to go. If the stain is still there, just repeat until its gone!

Melissa July 14, 2014 at 1:34 pm

Thanks! That is cheaper and I definitely will do it!

Chris May 21, 2013 at 5:33 pm

I could see how this would work for the ring around the water level, but what about the grim and yuck up underneath the inside of the bowl?

Viola Ash May 27, 2013 at 10:45 am

i also tried vitamin C tablets. Works great.

Carole May 31, 2013 at 2:42 am

Coke is petfect for the toilet!!!! Wouldn’t drink!!

Heidi July 4, 2013 at 1:08 am

I work for a toilet manufacture and our QC guys tell us to not do this. It can stain the china. Barkeepers friend works great!!!

Becky July 6, 2013 at 8:53 pm

I live in area with really hard water. I tried the barkeeper’s friend as suggested above and it worked great! Also used a Mr. Clean magic eraser and a little elbow grease for the tougher spots. Did this to my non skid tub which seems virtually impossible to get clean and it worked well there too. So excited!

Rohn August 12, 2013 at 6:11 am

a cup full of bleach once a week has the same effect, but adds a clean scent that you can’t get with the coke.

Norske Gal December 4, 2013 at 2:48 am

For hard water stains under the toilet rim, dry the area where the build up is, soak pieces of toilet tissue in vinegar ( I’ve not tried Coke, but it’s about the acid) and stick them where the stains are overnight. If the build up is really thick, you may need to do it again. I use the same method in the bowl. I turn the water off at the wall, use a cup to empty as much as I can from the bowl, dry it, and stick the toilet tissue soaked with vinegar where it’s needed overnight. All those wasted years of pumice and cleanser

Sheila Davis January 9, 2016 at 12:41 am

You don’t have to use a cup to empty the water. You can use a plunger or a toilet brush to ‘push’ the water out, down the toilet. Just keep pushing water down the toilet kind of fast, if won’t refill up into the bowl until you flush it again.

Kate March 1, 2014 at 12:49 am

This fits in perfectly with my idea of cleaning~ easiest way to get it done!

robin March 1, 2014 at 12:59 am

coke also works good on cleaning a grimy windshield, but it does work great and a very nasty toilet

Emily March 1, 2014 at 1:35 am

Only reason I’d buy coke :-)

Melissa March 1, 2014 at 2:34 am

Pick me

Cynthia Sawyer March 1, 2014 at 1:40 pm

I am just glad I don’t drink Coke. Imagine what it does inside your body!

CHERYL MCLEOD March 1, 2014 at 9:15 pm

I am going to try this tonight. Thanks.

jillian March 18, 2014 at 10:53 pm

vodka works better just a cheap bottle of vodka cleans toilets so much better than soda

mary February 3, 2015 at 3:55 am

I NEVER thought this was gonna work. We had a toilet that wouldn’t flush right for the longest time. We’ve tried EVERYTHING but replacing it.Even new wax seal and new internal parts. We put a 2 liter of coke in over night swished it around a few times the next day under the rim real good….wouldn’t you know it…GOOD AS NEW! I wouldn’t have believed it unless I tried this MYSELF! !!
